Synopsis
American Alley is the new name of the camptown, where the yanggongju—once called “patriots earning foreign currency”—are no longer present. What remains are elderly women and “entertainers” from the Philippines and Russia. In American Alley, then and now, American soldiers have always been figures who arrive and leave. Survival, therefore, demands strength. Some women choose marriage and motherhood; others experience divorce or deportation. These astonishing events, compressed into a short span of life, unfold within the rhythms of everyday existence: eating, dressing, sleeping, and endlessly traveling by bus and airplane.
기지촌은 여전히 현재진행중이다. ‘아메리칸 앨리’는 기지촌의 새로운 이름으로, 이곳에는 더 이상 ‘달러벌이의 역군’이라 불리던 양공주는 없다. 다만 나이든 할머니들과 필리핀, 러시아에서 온 ‘엔터테이너’들이 살고 있을 뿐이다. 과거에도 현재에도 아메리칸 앨리에서 미군은 언제나 왔다가 떠나는 존재였다. 따라서 ‘생존’하기 위해서는 강해져야만 한다. 어떤 여성들은 결혼을 선택하고 또 출산을 하기도 하며, 이혼을 경험하고, 추방당하기도 한다. 짧은 시간 안에 경험하게 되는 이 놀라운 사건들은 여성들이 밥을 먹고, 옷을 입고, 잠을 자고, 끝없이 버스와 비행기를 타고 이동하는 시간 속에서 전개된다.
